New Orleans Guide
Chauffeur vs Uber or Lyft in New Orleans: which one when?
Rideshare is great for a quick hop across town. Here's when a pre-booked chauffeur is the better call, and what each really costs.

Most visitors use both, and that's the right instinct.
Uber and Lyft changed how people get around, and for a short ride on an ordinary evening they're hard to beat. A chauffeur service solves a different problem: the trips that have to go right, at a set time, at a set price, with a driver you know is coming. We're a chauffeur company, so take this as an insider's view, but we'll be straight about when the app is the better choice.
01 The short answer
Use the app for quick, flexible hops. Book a chauffeur for the trips that can't go wrong.
Airport runs with a flight to catch, client pickups, nights when the whole city wants a ride at once, groups that need to stay together, and anything you'd rather not leave to chance: that's where pre-booked service earns its price.
02 Side by side
| Uber / Lyft | Chauffeur service | |
|---|---|---|
| Booking | On demand, minutes ahead | Ahead of time, set for your schedule |
| Driver | Whoever accepts the request | A named, background-checked chauffeur, assigned in advance |
| Price | Changes with demand | Set before you book, the same on the busiest night |
| Airport | Request after landing, meet at the rideshare pickup area | Flight tracked, chauffeur waiting at arrivals, 30 minutes free wait |
| Vehicle | Varies by driver | The class you book: sedan, SUV or Sprinter |
| Waiting | The ride ends at drop-off | Hourly service: the car waits between stops |
| Groups | Several cars, split up | One SUV or Sprinter for up to 14 |
| Business | Personal receipts | Corporate accounts, one monthly invoice |
| Best for | Short, flexible, solo hops | Airports, events, groups, clients, schedules |
03 When rideshare is the right call
- A short ride across town on an ordinary night.
- A spontaneous trip you didn't plan, like a last-minute dinner.
- You're on your own with a light bag and flexible timing.
- Price matters most and a few minutes' wait doesn't.
For these, the app is quick and inexpensive, and there's no reason to book ahead.
04 When a chauffeur is worth it
A flight to catch An early departure or a late arrival, when "no cars available" isn't an option.
Someone else's arrival Picking up a client, a speaker or family, where the first impression matters.
The whole city wants a ride After a Saints game, a Superdome concert or a parade, when apps surge and waits stretch.
A group One Sprinter keeps up to 14 people together instead of four cars and a group chat.
A day of stops Meetings, a day trip or a night out, with the car waiting at each stop.
Business travel A set price, a named driver and a proper invoice for the expense report.
The question isn't which is better. It's which trips you can't afford to leave to chance.
05 The New Orleans factor
- Event weekends Mardi Gras, Jazz Fest, Essence Fest, the Sugar Bowl and big conventions bring huge crowds downtown. Demand for rides spikes at exactly the same moments, and closed streets slow every car.
- The French Quarter at night Some blocks close to traffic, so any car, app or chauffeur, picks up nearby. With a chauffeur, the spot is agreed in advance and the car is already there.
- The airport MSY is about 15 miles west of downtown. Rideshare pickups use a designated area; a pre-booked chauffeur tracks the flight and is waiting at arrivals when you have your bags.
- The heat From May to September, waiting on a curb for a ride that's "4 minutes away" for the third time is its own small ordeal.
06 What it costs in practice
On a quiet day, a rideshare from MSY to downtown usually costs less than a chauffeured transfer. The gap narrows, or closes, when demand surges, when you need a larger vehicle, or when there are several of you.
Chauffeured rates · MSY transfer · hourly
Executive sedan
Mercedes-Maybach or BMW 760i · up to 2
$145 MSY transfer $125 per hour
3-hour minimum for hourly
Luxury SUV
Cadillac Escalade · up to 6
$185 MSY transfer $169 per hour
3-hour minimum for hourly
Sprinter van
Mercedes-Benz Sprinter · up to 14
$295 MSY transfer $195 per hour
4-hour minimum for hourly
A group example: ten colleagues landing at MSY would need three or four rideshare cars, each priced on demand. One Sprinter takes all of them for a flat $295, about $30 each, and they arrive together.
Chauffeured rates are set before you book and don't change with demand. Gratuity isn't included. See the rates page.
07 Questions people ask
Is a chauffeur more expensive than Uber in New Orleans?
On a quiet day, usually yes. During events, at peak times or for groups, the difference narrows or disappears, because chauffeured rates are set in advance and one larger vehicle replaces several cars.
How much is a chauffeur from MSY to the French Quarter?
A flat $145 in an executive sedan, $185 in an Escalade for up to six, and $295 in a Sprinter van for up to 14. Gratuity isn't included.
Is a chauffeur more reliable than rideshare?
For a scheduled trip, yes: the car and chauffeur are assigned in advance, flights are tracked, and the price is set. Rideshare depends on which drivers are nearby at the moment you request.
Can I book a chauffeur at short notice?
Often, yes. We ask for at least 24 hours for standard bookings, but call (877) 527-2888 for same-day requests and we'll tell you straight away whether it can be done.
Can a chauffeur wait for me?
Yes, with hourly service. The car stays with you between stops, from $125 per hour in a sedan with a 3-hour minimum.
